Hudson River

The Hudson River, originally called Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk in Mahican, is a river running mainly through New York State but partly forming the boundary between the states of New York and New Jersey. It is named for Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Netherlands, who explored it in 1609, though the first European to see it was the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 whose expedition was financed by the citizens of Lyon, France, under the auspices of King Francois I. Early European settlement of the area clustered around the river.

Robben Island, South Africa

Robben Island (Dutch for "seal island") is an island 12 km off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa.

It was first inhabited thousands of years ago when the channel dividing it from the mainland was not under water. Since the end of the 17th century, Robben Island has been used to isolate certain people, mainly as a prison, and among its first permanent inhabitants were political leaders from various Dutch colonies, not only in South Africa, but also from Indonesia.

Northwest Passage

The Northwest Passage is a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through the Arctic archipelago of Canada.

Between the end of the 15th century and the 20th century, Europeans attempted to establish a commercial sea route north and west around the American continents. The English called the route the Northwest Passage, while the Spanish called it the Strait of Anián. The desire for the route motivated much of the European exploration of both coasts of North America.

Kauai is the name of one of Hawaii’s islands. From these lyrics you would probably gather that the meaning of the name Kauai would be something like ‘Island of Love’ … but it probably isn’t as there is no known meaning for the name.

Mississippi River, USA

The Mississippi River is the second longest river in the United States. The longest is the Missouri River, which flows into the Mississippi River. Taken together, they form the largest river system in North America. If measured from the head of the Missouri, the length of the Missouri/Mississippi combination is approximately 3,895 miles (6,270 km) long.
